Who takes computer? 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
Who takes coding? 7th and 8th grade students.
When and how long do students have computer/coding? 6th grade students have computer all year long, every-other-day. We are the opposite class of Physical Education. 7th and 8th grade students have computer class 2 out of their 4 quarters (opposite PE and Tech Skills). 7th and 8th grade students have 1 quarter of coding (the "Late Work Policy" below does not apply to coding classes).
Do students need to have used a computer before? Students do not need to have any prior knowledge on the computer from this class, nor do they need to have a computer at home. We do more Microsoft Office and Movie Maker in computer class. We do not use the Chromebooks much. Students do not need to have any coding skills prior to 7th grade.
What kind of programs are students learning? Students are learning on Microsoft Office 2010. Students are also using Google Docs on the Chromebooks. Students will also be learning how to code, we use code.org.
What do students work on? They will learn everything from keyboarding skills, layering skills, to script-writing for documentaries and commercials, to powerpoint presentations and movie maker. It is really amazing at how much students learn in such a short amount of time.
Do students use computer in other classes? Yes! Students will use their computer skills in the majority of their classes. The most often used skill is keyboarding. Keyboarding is a lifelong skill.
Will my student be behind if we do not have a computer or Internet at home? No! Some assignments do not even require the computer ~ rather their notes. If the computer is required, students are given class time to complete the assignment. They need to use their time very wisely - if they do not use their time wisely, they may not get done. The lab is also open in the morning before school and after school. There are also computers in the media center for the students to use. Students can also sign up to come to the computer lab during WIN time.
Late Work Policy: ** Students can get full credit on their assignment/project. This will show in the "WORK" category. --> Students will always know how well he/she did meeting criteria and following directions - there are no points taken off here for being late. ** Students may lose points (out of 10) on the assignment/project in the "MEETING DEADLINES" category. (examples) --> If a student turns in an assignment on time, he/she would get 10 out of 10 points (10-0=10). --> If a student turns in an assignment the same day, but after the deadline, he/she would get 9 out of 10 points (10- 1=9) --> If a student turns in an assignment 3 days late, he/she would get 7 out of 10 points (10-3=7). --> If a student turns in an assignment 5 days late, he/she would get 5 out of 10 points (10-5=5). --> If a student turns in an assignment 8 days late, he/she would get 2 out of 10 points (10-8=2). --> If a student turns in an assignment 10 days late, he/she would get 0 out of 10 points (10-10=0).
